Ferrara: UNESCO World Heritage List

From 1995 on, UNESCO has included the historical centre of Ferrara in the list of World Cultural Heritage as a wonderful example of a town planned in the Renaissance and still keeping its historical centre intact. The town planning criteria expressed in Ferrara had a deep influence on the progress of town planning in the following centuries.

From 1999, this acknowledgement has been extended to the Po Delta Park and to the itinerary of the ancient dwellings, called Delizie Estensi. The entire property was delineated and nominated Ferrara, City of the Renaissance and its Po Delta.
Ferrara
The walled city of Ferrara is located in the middle of the Padana plain. Amazingly intact, twisted medieval streets follow the course of a river that has long since disappeared.

The best-known image must be that of the Renaissance period during which the Este family contributed greatly to the splendour of the city and left indelible traces of their heritage. Some exemples would be the enormous “Herculean Addition” project that vastly enlarged the size of the city; the impressive art work from the 14th and 15th centuries and the Giudizio Universale by Bastianino.
The centre is meeting place surrounded by activity and style that is dominated by the buildings of the rich and powerful.

There is the splendid Romanesque-Gothic Cathedral and the Esate Castle that blends the magnificence of its rooms with dark blood stained memories. Palazzo Schifanoia with the magnificent Sala dei mesi: scenes from the life of the Duke Borso and feature allegorical representations of the months.
To the north of the castle unfolds Corso Ercole I d'Este with the famous "Addizione Erculea".
This avant-garde project is composed of new streets that were wide and straight, along which stood elegant buildings, such as Palazzo dei Diamanti with the Picture Gallery and the Modern and Contemporary Art Gallery. Palazzo Massari, home to the permanent exhibition of Giovanni Boldini.
The celebrated Piazza Ariostea where annually take place the spectacular Palio di Ferrara, the most ancient Palio in the world.
The walls that encircle the historic centre, constituting one of the oldest and most impressive defensive systems of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Comacchio, the Little Venice
30 km from Ferrara, towards the sea, we can find Comacchio, named “Little Venice”.

Comacchio is the most original and fascinating historic town in the Po Delta. Heir to ancient Spina, fought over by Ferrara and Ravenna, Popes and Emperors for centuries, its origins go far back: it rose up on 13 islets at the dawn of the Middle Ages and founded its urban and economic development exclusively on the water.
Fishing, fish-breeding in the lagoon and producing salt were the source of its prosperity.
Today, Comacchio still boasts unique, intact architectural features; a town of canals, palaces and monumental bridges, inhabited by people with a strong sense of identity who are proud of their origins.
The splendid lagoon town of Comacchio is a treasure-chest of unusual beauties and historical testimony, a little centre that was born and still lives between the land and the water.

The centre is ideal for a pleasant, care-free stoll, leading the visitor to Palazzo Bellini, built in the second half of the 1800's and top the Trepponti.

Close by there's an archeological museum which exhibits the cargo of a Roman merchant vessel found in 1981 at Valle Ponti.
Trepponti” was built for defending the city. In fact, the only means of access was from the confluence of the river ways. It is certainly the one single building which best represents the lagoon features of the city of Comacchio. It was built in the first half of the seventeenth century.

It is formed of five wide rounded staircases, each one extending over one of the canals, topped by a central structure in Istrian stone and two towers.
Its purpose was to connect the network of internal canals with the canal leading to the sea.

The Po Delta

The Park was set up in 1988 by the Emilia Romagna Regional Goverment especially to protect one of the most outstanding natural habitats in Italy.

The Comacchio lagoons are the largest lagoon systems in Italy. They cover an area of more than 11,000 hectares between Comacchio and the river Reno and are connected to the sea via canals.
They form an environment of rare beauty within the Po Delta Park: in some places the stretches of brackish water are interrupted by rises in the land or divided by embankments and ancient sandbars, in others they extend freely like mirrors reflecting the ever-changing light of the sky.

The Comacchio salt-works are fascinating flatness, interrupted only by the silent presence of the Casoni, the buildings in which the ancient salt extraction works were once based.

Boat and bicycle are the two perfect modes of transport for best exploring the Delta.
The boats ascend the river, gliding on the water, into a silence that is broken only by the rustling of plants and the singing of birds.
Boats depart from the village of Gorino, where it's possible to visit the Lighthouse and travel along the River as far as the sea.
Sailing for Goro, home to a fishing community since time immemorial, we can find the “Sacca di Goro”, where mussels, oysters, clams have fonud their ideal habitat.
During the excursions in the Delta Park, we can admire a territory rich in natural environments, housing hundreds of plant and animal species.
It contains absolutely unique elements of biodiversity: characteristics which make it a paradise for naturalists, biologists, scolars, tourists and birdwatchers who arrive from every part of the world.

Cento, Carnival city
The town is a small capital of art, cuisine and economy and also the point in which Ferrarese, Bolognese and Modenese traditions have blended harmoniously. Native town of the famous painter Guercino.

The Rocca, together with Porta Pieve (Pieve Gate) is what remains of the ancient defensive system. The primitive building dates back to 1378 and was constructed on the order of the bishop of Bologna.

The Piazza del Guercino, with the Governo's Palace, the Municipal Gallery and the Municipal Theatre.
This beautiful Theatre was built between 1856 and 1861 and was projected by A. Giordani from Cento. The theatre grew immediately important in the Opera world, representing great operas interpreted by illustrious people.

The Municipal Gallery is housed in a Eighteenth-century building. In 1839 the works of the Gallery were first exhibited inside the palace. At the moment the collection groups the greatest number of Guercino's paintings, and also from Cento and of bolognese artists of the 18th and 19th centuries and is displayed in 15 rooms, on two floors.

We know that Cento's Carnival (annual event of Febbrary and Mach) dates back at least to the 1600s. For centuries, the party remained a characteristic local celebration. Then, at the end of the 1980s, when twinned with the carnival in Rio de Janeiro, it became an internationally important date.

Pomposa and its Medieval Abbey
A masterpiece of Romanesque art, Pomposa Abbey can be seen from a distance with its towering campanile, which dominates the surrounding countryside like a "lighthouse" in the sea of green that surrounds it.
The site consists of several buildings: the Chapterhouse, the Refectory, the Museo Pomposiano, the Church and the Bell Tower.

The church was founded in the 6th century A.D. and from the middle of the 9th century the first community of Benedictine monks began to form, reaching its peak after the year 1000, when the Abbot’s spiritual and political jurisdiction extended over all the surrounding villages.

A true lighthouse of culture, Pomposa had one of the most extensive libraries of the time. Among the personalities that made it so famous were the saint and abbot Guido degli Strambiati and Guido da Pomposa (known by the name of Guido d’Arezzo), inventor of the modern musical notation.

Mesola and the Castle
The most important building in the village is certainly the massive and elegant hunting castle built by the last Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso II during the second half of the XVIth century. It was the last of the so-called "delizie" of the Este family. It was meant to provide hospitality for the court during the hunting season, but the entire complex was surrounded by fortification walls with towers.

Nowadays the castle is used as the seat of the Municipal Library and the Historic Archive. In the Civic Art Gallery important exhibitions of contemporary art take place every year. The Centre for Environmental Education, related to the nature of the surrounding Po Delta Park is also located in the castle.
